Imagine Music Festival Artist Spotlight: SNBRN

The time has finally come, the week of Imagine Music Festival. Some may call this the last festival of the summer, some would say this could rival with the west coast festivals, while others may disagree. But one thing all festival headliners can agree on is that the end of summer is bittersweet. It’s time to dust off your dirty sneakers for just one more weekend. Atlanta Motor Speedway will be transformed into an aquatic fairytale. The time has come to dive into a world away from your reality. Like a temporary escape to Atlantis in Atlanta.

Our first IMF Artist Spotlight goes to the LA-based sunset house producer, SNBRN. It feels appropriate because I’ll bet money that some of us will get a little sun burnt this IMF weekend. Kevin Chapman has been catching attention and hearts with his huge summer hit “Raindrops” in 2015, but he is no stranger to the making mad remixes as well. You may recognize his style from his viral remix of “21 Questions” by 50 Cent or the Marvin Gaye classic “Sexual Healing”.

Chapman started out like any other music-loving fan, he decided to give music a go. He picked up a few instruments- guitar, drums, piano, and trumpet and just went with it. Chapman hid behind a few alias names before claiming the name SNBRN for himself, and it just fits him so perfectly. With his unique style of indie, deep, dance, and progressive sounds, Sunset House was born. Vibing out to a live SNBRN set at dusk is one hell of a way to finish this summer off.

Catch SNBRN at the Disco Inferno on Sunday Day 3 at 7:45PM EST (Times are subject to change). In the meantime, enjoy this groovy mix by SNBRN from Splash House and Earmilk.com to get you in the mood for some sunset house at Imagine this weekend.

Lotus Set To Release New Album: Eat the Light (7/15/16)

Get ready for a funky and groovy new album titled, “Eat the Light,” from Lotus which will be released on Friday, July 15th, 2016. The 10 track studio album is available now for pre-order on iTunes. For those who don’t know, Lotus is an electronic rock band based out of Philadelphia, PA. The band consists of five members: Mike Greenfield (Drums), Jesse Miller (Bass, Sampler), Luke Miller (Guitar, Keys), Mike Rempel (Guitar) and Chuck Morris (Percussion). This album features vocals on every song, which is actually a first for Lotus. Guest singers appear throughout ranging from soulful to indie, male and female, electronic and rock. The tracks bubble with contagious dance energy and blast into orbit with sing-along choruses. Tightly produced yet raw grooves recall sounds of The Talking Heads, Jamiroquai, and LCD Soundsystem. Lotus will take the album on the road with a 2016-2017 US tour to be announced shortly.

The Magic Hour, just after sunrise and just before sunset, is loved by cinematographers for the way it makes everything look heightened and surreal. Colors are brighter; shadows are darker. It is a moment when the impossible feels within reach. Eat the Light lives in this moment. Themes of sunlight, summer, cinema, and possibility permeate the album. It essentially takes the listener on a musical journey that will keep your ears guessing from start to finish. Whether the Magic Hour is the start of a fresh new day or the end of a long party-filled night, take a moment and Eat the Light.

“I wanted Eat the Light to be a celebratory album that people could sing along to while driving down the California coast,” says Luke Miller. “This is the sound of summer that makes you want to dance and raise your hands to the sky.”

Jesse Miller explains, “It is a pop record in the sense that the arrangements are purposely simplified and the melodies are catchy. We want people to be humming these songs days after hearing them. The album doesn’t need an accompanying catalytic life story to be explained, just put it on the stereo and enjoy.

Lotus premiered the first single, “Eats the Light,” earlier this year with Billboard noting “the track’s urgent drive and stripped-down arrangement, a nod to Talking Heads’ Remain In Light era.” Denver based singer/songwriter/producer Gabe Otto (Pan Astral), who performed the David Byrne role in Lotus’ Talking Heads Deconstructed shows, takes the vocals duties. It was only a taste of what’s to come. Here is a full album breakdown of the tacks you will hear below, along with a couple tracks which are available to listen to. As for the rest of the album, well, you’ll just have to hold off a little while longer before you can listen to the whole shebang.

Move Too Fast” is an evocative and playful track with a skittering drum beat and insistent, syncopated bass line. It evokes the feeling of weightlessness while having a head-nodding beat and vocals by Johnny Fissinger.

Anti-Gravity” features LA-based singer Oriel Poole whose seductive vocals draw influence from Erykah Badu and MØ. The song has a laid-back vibe with subtle, funky guitar licks and rich synths accompanying a catchy chorus. The lyrics explore the delirious, floating feeling evoked when summer love is in the air.

Combining electronic elements with a rock band swagger, “I’ve Been a Fool (Toy Guns)” features layers of sound that build to an explosion of rock glory. Jesse Miller takes the vocal lead offering a raw, unpolished touch while Gabe Otto sings backup. The same pairing can be heard on “Sleep When We Are Dead,” a song that hits right from the start with a raw, garage-band groove developing into a group-vocal chorus reminiscent of a late-70s anthemic sing-along mixed with 2000s dance-rock.

White Light Fadeaway” features Steve Yutzy-Burkey’s high tenor over a twisted island lilt. Synths and heavy percussion dance around the laid-back yet slightly dark groove. The Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter is a long time collaborator of Lotus, teaming up on past songs “Tip of the Tongue,” “Disappear in a Blood-Red Sky,” and “The Surf.”

Philadelphia-based Soul singer-songwriter Mutlu Onaral, known for his work with Hall & Oates and Amos Lee, handles vocals on two tracks. The album opener, “Fearless,” is a song about the indestructible feeling that propels you to try something new and scary. It draws from disco influences with funky guitar rhythms, steady percussion, and 70s-esque strings. Mutlu’s voice also rides over this twilight-hued tune “When Our Nerves No Longer Twitch.” Elements of glitch electronics combine with Wurlitzer and guitar for a unique, yet hook-heavy song that twists and turns through its narrative arc.

Suntan” features the timeless, gorgeous vocals of Denver-based singer Rachel Eisenstat (Raven Jane). A tropical, sun-drenched vibe is accented with reverb-soaked guitar, marimba, and percussion.

The album comes to a conclusion with “Sodium Vapor” featuring Austin based singer-songwriter Andy Bianculli (Star Parks, Feofollet). Americana-Pysch-Rock filtered through the Lotus lens – acoustic guitar, upright piano, synths, fuzz-guitar leads create an evocative song in the vein of left-field Wilco or the Flaming Lips.

Alesso ‘I Wanna Know’ – Halogen Remix (Out Now on Spotify) [VIDEO]

The latest single titled “I Wanna Know” from Swedish producer Alesso has been quite the summer hit all over the festival circuit of 2016. He definitely switched things up a little by taking a more down-tempo approach than what we are used to with this piece. In this case, a change of pace is actually a good thing in this fast moving industry. The track has a catchy guitar melody attached with some powerful vocals from Nico & Vinz which created a memorable summer anthem for dance music. With that, the song laid a path for several other producers to give it their own unique spin. Even Alesso himself joined forces with Deniz Koyu to create a more upbeat version of the track which released back in May.

Out of the several remixes that have been created for this track, one that truly stands out the most was recently released by Atlanta based house music duo, Halogen. These two are no strangers to taking some big tracks and creating remixes which gain ample feedback from major names within the industry including dance music fans as well. This remix of “I Wanna Know” has an incredible piano melody along with a bass line that will instantly have any crowd grooving. This one will surely receive tons of feedback and support from across the dance music scene around the globe. Remixes can be a hit or miss with most original songs that are released; but it seems like when Halogen gets their crafty hands on any track, they consistently deliver. It is safe to say that the remix from Halogen is just a little better than the original, no offense to Alesso. Below is a nice little music video which includes the Halogen remix of “I Wanna Know”. You can also hear the track on Spotify or SoundCloud Go as well. Be sure to go and hit that follow button on Halogen’s SoundCloud page or like them on Facebook so you don’t miss anything new coming from these guys. Trust us on this one, they are heading places and you won’t regret joining them on their journey.

One Grand Later and I Am Ready For Bonnaroo 2016: Why We Do What We Do

When I first got into the scene, I was definitely overwhelmed. It was like stepping into the Twilight zone, the Ringling Brother’s Circus on steroids; and of course, I fell in love with everything. There was an education I had to gain on this new world of music before I could find the pockets within it that I could relate to. The people that led me the way I proudly now call my festival family. Every single one of us has a distinct taste we prefer in the world of electronic music, and a style unique to our own beliefs, values, dreams, and passions. The most prevalent of feelings has been the exuberant sense of unity that has drawn us closer simply from the sounds we hear and rage to together. And this beautiful adventure of music, artistry, discovery, love, and friendship is exactly why I put one thousand dollars into attending Bonnaroo Music Festival this weekend in Manchester, Tennessee.

Now I would say about 60% percent of people in the world will read that and think, “This girl is crazy”, or “Think of all the things she could have done with that money instead”. I do not disagree with the possibilities I could have encountered with that money; and I won’t deny there are many people in society who would find no interest in what I am about to encounter. But for a moment, just let me share with you what makes every hour of overtime, every extra dollar saved that would have been spent on useless things, and every hick up along the way of planning the latter adventure is worth it in my eyes.

It is no surprise that the human condition is well introduced to the power of sound and music. No human out there can honestly state music has not infiltrated beyond the walls, mazes, and latters that make up our minds and our souls. It is a relationship beyond our control but yet vital to our existence. Within each of us lies a realm of space only we see and can only be filled with the music our candid ears desire to absorb. For me, I know this space very well. I have danced within it, cried and laughed, and even had the chance to share it with a handful of other lovely souls. Music has been a powerful vein within my heart of expression and story telling that I have exercised through the performing arts, painting, and journalism. In attending this festival specifically, I am taking on the opportunity to see and hear over 20 different artists whom I have allowed to fill my space in the last 12 years of my life. Many of the bands I am grateful to be finally encountering this weekend include: Band of Horses of whom I first discovered when I was 12, the band Daughter at age 15, M83 at the age of 13, and one of the most influential bands of my entire existence I discovered when I was just 10, Death Cab For Cutie.

My mom had Prince and Michael Jackson, my grandmother was head over heels obsessed with Elvis, and I will never forget the love my grandfather holds for the classic, Hank Williams. We are incapable of avoiding the ecstatic pleasure of hearing a song that gets us better than we do; a song that proves more understanding than our closest friends, family members, and acquaintances. In this weekend I will be revisiting the small girl I used to be, and will be reminiscing on the changes that have come into my life which made me who I am today. The bands and the artistry I have chosen to invest in have indirectly invested in me, and I refuse to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime to celebrate my human condition and the places I have come from with the sound track that has lead me here.

I welcome the judgment and the confusion of others; because then I can share with them my reasons and hopefully help them discover what it is about all of these music festivals that draws in thousands of people every year. Not everyone goes for the same reason, but everyone has one. I can only hope it is to fill that space inside each of us that is necessary for life and love. Music can take you anywhere and tell you anything you need to know. So with my best friend and my partner in crime, a suitcase, and a tent, I am ready to take on my “expensive” adventure. Money cannot buy us happiness. But what we choose to spend it on; that is what determines the importance of our selves and helps us live in the sounds that make us whole.

I dedicate this piece to the ones who got me here- what would the art of music and life be without all of you?
