Kandi Poppers: Your Custom Rave Gear Is Here! (Interview)

Aside of the music in the rave culture, being your own unique person is another side of the culture that sets itself apart from others. During the 90’s, there were the boiler suits, cyber gear, and phat pants. People dressed up in all kinds of different and unique outfits to express themselves and to look cool. Soon the smiley-faced shirts and phat pants of the 90’s slowly faded away, and evolved into a newer look for ravers. Now raver girls can be seen wearing a lot less clothing with an occasional tutu and top with some fluffy leggings. In the rave scene, as far as fashion is concerned, anything goes. Although many people either don’t have the time, or they don’t know how to make their own cool rave outfit. And that’s where the Kandi Poppers come in.

Kandi Poppers is a custom rave outfit designer company based out of Atlanta, Georgia. This brand new company is run by co-owners, Nicole and Melanie. All you have to do is give the Kandi Poppers girls your idea for an outfit; and then girls will begin to handcraft your outfit just for you. We had the pleasure of meeting these girls for an interview with Kandi Poppers to give you an idea of who they are and what they are about. Check it out below and don’t forget to also visit their Etsy page to get yourself a custom-made rave outfit of your own!

How did you ladies come up with the idea of Kandi Poppers?

Nicole: Well basically it all started because Melanie and I started going to raves together a few years ago. We loved to wear tutus and we would find cute tops to go along with them. Melanie got tired of having to adjust her top after dancing around so much, so I just decided to make her a custom-fit top. I posted it online and got tons of feedback with people interested in me making one for them, so we just decided to make it into an actual business to make them for people.

Have you thought about maybe expanding and hiring employees?

Melanie: We would like to keep it with us two for right now, but we do enjoy collaborating with other companies.

Nicole: We do work well together, but we would like to have people work for us if we get big enough in the future. We do have girls who promote for us but that’s it for right now. We are just trying to get ourselves going first before bringing on extra help.

How about finding an actual store for your business along with the online shop?

Nicole: We would love to actually have a store that customers can come in and pick out an outfit in person. We still want to keep the online shop for convenience, though. I would love to have an actual store so that we can help fit the customers, because women are all different shapes and sizes. Maybe in the future when the business grows like we want it to, we will shoot for finding an actual store to use.

Melanie: Like Nicole said, it would be a lot easier for us to actually fit our customers if we had a store. I agree that would definitely be something we would work towards when we grow our business more.

So with your outfits being hand-made, how do you start with making one?

Melanie: Basically what we do is come up with an idea, and put out a demo on our Etsy. Then what our customers do is choose what kind of design they like and we get their bra size from them. We get the same bra that we used in the demo and make the design specific to the customer’s requests.

Nicole: And that’s pretty much the whole point of our company is that people have these certain identities within the rave scene. What we at Kandi Poppers want to accomplish is taking your identity and expressing it on the outside.

Since you express that you will make anything for the customer, is there anything you won’t do as far as making an outfit?

Nicole: Well, we try to stay away from the outfits that would have drug references on them. We’ve actually had some people ask us to make those for them and we respectfully declined. We want to be professional and not make outfits that have those references on them, so that’s pretty much what we won’t do.

Melanie: I mean besides the drug references, we will pretty much do anything else. Like if you want something crazy like a pizza-themed outfit, we will do that. We are very versatile and we like challenges!

Have you seen the business beginning to grow already?

Nicole: We are actually blown away by how much the business has grown in the short time we have been running. I mean we have only been around for a little over a month. What we expected to happen in around six months has happened in just one month which is very exciting. We have looked around for others doing the same things that we are doing in Atlanta, and we haven’t found much so we kind of have a leg up here locally.

Melanie: Yeah, what is helping us grow is we don’t really say no to many ideas, so we definitely try to keep open minds.

With ‘Kandi’ being in your name, have you considered branching from outfits and making kandis for people as well?

Nicole: Yes! That is definitely in our future with making those. We don’t really want to sell it because that goes against the whole kandi concept, but we definitely would make bracelets.

Melanie: We have talked about actually including some kandi along with a purchase of a bra or tutu as a special “thank you” gift from us.

Finally, what has been a big challenge for you so far with the outfits?

Melanie: Actually, we just recently had this order that we’ve started working on that is a 38F bra size. That’s honestly one of the bigger bras that we have had to work on, but we will definitely make it work for that person.

Nicole: Yeah, I agree that has definitely a challenge for us, but it’s nothing that we cant’ handle. Again, going back to what our company is about, we will fit your needs as a customer no matter the body size or type.

Benny Benassi: A Musical Genius Comes To Atlanta @ Opera Nightclub

On Sunday night, May 25th, Benny Benassi graced Atlanta with his musical presence for a night that many will not forget. This was a special Memorial Day event held on Sunday at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta. The venue was packed out to see the electronic music legend, Benny Benassi, perform on a very special day. One of the greatest things about experiencing Benny Benassi live is that he has the amazing ability to blend the classics with new hits as well.

From the time Benny’s set began, he had the entire dance floor moving. A legend like Benny just has the unique skill to fuse together timeless classic electronic hits to the listener’s favorite tunes of today. I haven’t experienced anything like a Benny Benassi set before. I noticed everyone around the entire venue was having a blast and loving the music that Benny was playing. Each transition to the next song seemed to pump up the crowd even more throughout the night. One memorable moment during his set was when he played one of his very popular songs called “Cinema.” Benny started out playing the original “Cinema” track with the build-up. Then towards the end of the song, he surprised everyone by throwing in the always amazing Skrillex dubstep edit that made the crowd go crazy. It was also very interesting that Benny played a variety of house music including some Deorro, and the latest Carnage banger, “Krakatoa.”

Benny Benassi is definitely an artist that you must go and experience live for yourself if you love electronic music. He is one of those producers that knows exactly how to energize the crowd; and he truly knows how to play the tunes that get dance floors moving from opening to close. This was an amazing night for everyone there at the show. It was a great way to celebrate a Memorial Day weekend with an electronic music legend performance such as Benny Benassi. If you haven’t seen Benny Benassi live yet, you are truly missing out on an amazing experience.

Zomboy Infects Atlanta At Opera Nightclub With Special Guest Cookie Monsta

Rather than milk and cookies being everyone’s favorite, how about zombies and cookies instead? Sounds like an insane and gross combo right? Well last Friday, May 23rd, that combination was made a reality for Atlanta when two dubstep masterminds known as Zomboy and Cookie Monsta, bestowed some heavy bass to the city. The event at Opera Nightclub was apart of the first week of Zomboy and Cookie Monsta’s Outbreak Tour for 2014.

Both Zomboy and Cookie Monsta are dubstep producers from the UK, and have been doing several collabs recently, so it was no surprise to see the two on tour together starting earlier this month. The two dubstep superstars were a great blend, which combined both dark heavy bass, with that wobbly dubstep we all know and love, along with a little bit of electro house as well. Cookie Monsta was more on the darker dubstep side with heavy wobble, and then Zomboy brought out the electro house and more traditional dubstep feel.

Another amazing addition to this dubstep filled evening was the incredible visuals both Zomboy and Cookie Monsta displayed during their sets. We were blown away at the creepy and odd visuals that were flashing before us during Cookie Monsta’s opening set. While his dark and heavy wob dubstep was blasting in our faces, we were also showed visuals of a very creepy sadistic looking clown face that appeared several times across the illuminate screen. I don’t think there was a person attending that didn’t talk about how creepy, yet awesome those visuals were. Of course, Zomboy followed up with his odd, zombie-influenced animations as well. Each set’s visuals set the tone for each song that both Zomboy and Cookie Monsta masterfully blended together.

Overall, the event was a great success for the duo’s tour. Atlanta was infected with the Zomboy virus, and fed cookies by Cookie Monsta after his set was over. Who knew zombies and cookies would go together? The guys at Liquified did a great job with bringing in two great dubstep producers in one night. This was not the first time that the RaversChoice crew has witnessed an awesome Zomboy and Cookie Monsta show, and it definitely won’t be the last time either. Be sure to check out the rest of the dates of The Outbreak Tour for a city near you and experience Zomboy with Cookie Monsta for yourself.

Sunset Music Festival Gives Tips On Being Responsible This Weekend

The time is now upon us for Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida. With the festival being outdoors and in the Tampa Bay Central Florida region during the heat of spring, there are some things that you should keep in mind to stay safe during the festival. Luckily for those of you planning to attend this year’s Sunset Music Festival, the festival’s website posted some helpful tips to keep you and your friends safe over the next few days. These tips are crucial to keeping you all safe so everyone can have as much fun as possible at Sunset Music Festival this year. Here are the tips provided:

WATER IS ESSENTIAL

There will be a lot of dancing this Memorial Day weekend and we don’t want anyone to get sick from overheating and dehydration. We encourage you to drink lots of water, but not too much in a short time frame.

There are plenty free water stations positioned around the grounds and you can enjoy unlimited refills using the official SMF water bottles or Bota bags and camelbaks, now allowed at Sunset this year.

Accidents surrounding music events have been associated with low levels of electrolytes that are lost along with water when one becomes dehydrated. Such low levels of electrolytes, especially salt, can lead to brain swelling, seizures, heart problems and even death. So be sure to alternate between water and sports drinks that will be provided for you.

BRING ON THE COSTUMES

Wear something comfortable, lightweight and easy to dance in while enjoying world renowned artists pumping great music. Dark colors absorb heat rays, so avoid wearing all dark clothes. You should also steer away from heavy fabrics and faux furs, always remembering that comfortable tennis shoes are the best option on the dance floor.

HAVE YOU SEEN MY FRIENDS?

SMF brings thousands upon thousands of amazing people from across the country, so it could be really easy to get separated from your group due to the sheer size of the event. Always keep track of where your friends are by setting up meeting points and sticking together. Look out for one another. If you and your friends have been sweating, grab some water for the group to replenish nutrients lost – you can’t live off dancing alone. We will have personnel stationed around the grounds, so be sure to ask for help if you or one of your friends needs it.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

Medical personnel will be readily accessible and ready to assist you at any time via the medical tent on-site. From Band-Aids to aspirin, assistance is available to you should you need anything at all. Gatorade will also be made available upon request. If you are feeling unwell, seek medical attention immediately. Your health and safety is more important than waiting for the drop.

How Much Does Your Favorite Artist Cost To Book?

If you have ever wondered how much it costs to book your favorite artist, or any other artist for that matter, we now have a complete chart that tells you. This leak of booking prices was posted by Priceonomics anonymously. Some of these artists were expected to be costly such as Tiesto, who was listed at a whopping $200K-$400K. You will also find some very cheap artists under $5K, like Flatbush Zombies or DJ Green Lantern, whom I’m sure you’ve always wondered how much they cost. Take a look at these charts and see just how much money you wish you could be making as an artist.

Krewella Marries Couple During Sold Out Red Rocks Show (Video)

Just a few days ago, in front of a sold out crowd at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, Krewella paused their show for a moment to do something for a couple that was incredible. With about 10,000 people in attendance at the historical Colorado venue, the Yousef sisters, otherwise known as Krewella, stopped their show to bring couple, Gregg and Brittany, out on stage for a brief, but heartwarming wedding ceremony. Yasmine had recently became an ordained minister just for this special occasion. Right after the two were married, the duo followed up with their touching acoustic song, “Human.” It only seemed fitting to sing such a beautiful song after a moment like that.

I can only imagine how incredible it felt for the couple to be in front of 10,000 screaming fans getting married by Krewella. It must have been a rush as well as emotional to have stood there on stage at a historic venue during one of the most important moments of that couple’s life together, and sharing that moment with so many people.

Check out the magical moment for that couple right here.

Paul van Dyk: The Legend Returned To Atlanta Once Again At Opera Nightclub [Recap]

The trance music legend, Mr. Paul van Dyk, returned to the city of Atlanta at Opera Nightclub on Friday, May 9th. This event had most of us trance lovers counting down the days to be put in a state of trance by the Grammy Award winner, Paul van Dyk. I was very humbled to finally be able to see the man who was one of the many reasons I fell in love with trance music so long ago. His set was beautiful, the crowd was full of life, and the night was definitely one that we won’t forget.

There is just something about the feeling you get when you experience Paul van Dyk live. There were smiling faces and happiness all over the venue as Paul van Dyk played his wonderfully crafted set. That is one of the great qualities of getting to experience Paul van Dyk live in that his sets just make you feel alive. His blend of classic trance hits, as well as some of the most recent trance tracks, kept the crowd energized all night. The crowd at Opera was amazing, and among the crowd was a group known as the Atlanta Trance Family. These guys had brought with them a really cool banner to show off their their name,  Atlanta Trance Family. These trance lovers were very pleased to meet us and were nice enough to let us get a photo of their group.

Overall, the night went very well. Paul van Dyk live is not just another performance or a show to go to, it is an experience that you will never forget. The master of trance brought back a little bit of the classic sound of the old school trance style, along with playing some of the best in progressive trance. Some memorable tracks of the night was definitely when he played his classic, “Home,” and “I Don’t Deserve You.” Those two really energized the crowd and had everyone singing the lyrics loudly over the music, which was really cool to see. If you didn’t get a chance to experience Paul van Dyk for yourself, here is his latest recorded set at Ultra Music Festival in Miami for your listening pleasure; so you can hear why he is so incredible to see live.
