Sunset Music Festival 2018 Experience

Tampa, Florida – Memorial Day 2018 did not go quite as planned for the Tampa Bay Area, or those EDM fans attending the 6th annual Sunset Music Festival. Those watching the weather for weeks leading up to the festival were optimistically hopeful that the festival would go on, and fans would dance the Memorial Day weekend away with their closest friends and the finest of dance music hits from a heavy-hitting lineup from Disco Donnie Presents and Sunset Events.

Toward the end of last week, the weather was looking very unpromising, and local meteorologists were calling for an absolute washout from the looming Tropical Storm Alberto. Saturday showed signs that the weather was not in the favor of the SMF fans, but luckily the storm held off as day one progressed. The status for the weekend was still up in the air as the rain began to pour in spots all over the Tampa Bay Area throughout the evening. Fortunately, the rain was vey spotty, and the festival did go on for day one.

Fans were graced by an onslaught of talent on the main stage with some highlight performances from the night by Slander, San Holo, NGHTMRE, Rezz, and Marshmello. Rezz really stepped up by jumping in and taking care of business as a late addition to the bill due to some early lineup changes. Rezz treated fans with her unique hypnotic bass style with those elements reminiscent of those classic industrial sounding electronic bands of the 90s. This was without a doubt a takeaway performance from the one good day we got out of Sunset Music Festival 2018.

Over on the Horizon Stage for the special All My Friends (AMF) Takeover, headlined by Destructo, a big party of its own was brewing. From Habstrakt, to AC Slater, and a special hip-hop set from Yo Gotti, to Anna Lunoe, and the one and only Destructo, there was not a shortage of groovy dance floor heaters during the AMF Takeover party on day one. One of the highlights of the night was the special All My Friends B2B Session. For the last half hour of Destructo’s set, Wax Motif, AC Slater, and Anna Lunoe joined Destructo on stage for a massive b2b session to close out day one. This special b2b moment properly concluded a great first day to SMF 18.

Another great addition to SMF was the Corona Electric Beach Stage provided by the festival’s main sponsor Corona Extra. This dome covered side state nestled between Eclipse Stage and Horizon Stage. The sand covered dance floor and bamboo encased stage was the setting for some house music heaters like Dillon Nathaniel, Ardaland, Golf Clap, and closing out the stage was Anna Lunoe. All of those who were skeptical about the SMF lineup lacking in the house music realm were hopefully pleasantly surprised with the amount of house played that day at the Corona Electric Beach Stage.

Unfortunately day one was all that Tampa would be able to experience, as Tropical Storm Alberto made his way further over the state of Florida, and Tampa officials along with Gov. Rick Scott issued a state of emergency that resulted in the cancellation of day two at SMF. For those fans that were disheartened about the festival being cut short along with everyone’s fun time, SMF had no other option but to cancel day two. A state of emergency will cause any outdoor event to be shut down without hesitation. It was really discouraging knowing that the weather was actually nicer than day one after about 3 PM, but that’s a debate for another day.

Sunset Music Festival issued a statement Sunday afternoon apologizing to fans that they had to cancel the rest of the event. This was totally out of the hands of those in charge of the festival. This had everything to do with the tropical storm warning issued, and the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, calling for outdoor events in the effected areas to be shut down. Fans were certainly upset, and social media was hot with folks expressing their disappointment in the cancellation. However, Mother Nature and the city officials have the final say in whether or not a festival can go on. Unfortunately we were all on the short end of the stick when it came to SMF. All we can say is, be patient and hope that SMF can make up for it and provide another fantastic festival in 2019.

Sunset Music Festival 2018 & Corona Extra Presents: Corona Electric Beach at SMF Tampa

(Tampa – Florida) To those who are planning to attend SMF this year, prepare yourself for some sexy beats and the beach from Corona Electric Beach at Sunset Music Festival brought to you by Corona Extra, Sunset Events, and Disco Donnie Presents. This recently added stage, announced earlier this month, is going to provide all the summer vibes at SMF featuring a stacked lineup of some of the grooviest names in dance music, plus a few local and regional DJ’s to the Tampa Bay Area on Memorial Day weekend 2018.

The Corona Electric Beach stage has been touring around to different festivals across the country over the past few years. Some might have seen this special stage set up at festivals like EDC Las Vegas and Orlando, Spring Awakening, HARD Summer, Escape, and Nocturnal Wonderland. This will be a first for SMF, and fans are certainly in for a treat. The lineup for Corona Electric Beach at SMF is just as exciting as the beach-like, summer vibes this special venue has to offer. The stage will be hosted by a fantastic group of some talented house music acts. Fans of all things house music will get their fill of the underground four-on-the-floor next weekend at Raymond-James Stadium all while experiencing it at a beach-themed environment.

For day one on Saturday May 26, fans will hear some of the best of tech house tunes from Carabetta and Doons, Dillon Nathaniel, Golf Clap, and Tampa’s own, Nate Verde. Headlining the Corona Beach Stage will be the one and only, Anna Lunoe. Some names to keep in your radar for day 1 are Golf Clap, Dillon Nathaniel, and Anna Lunoe, and don’t sleep on local Tampa Bay house DJ, Nate Verde.

Sunday May 27 goes a little deeper, and will stay there with those wonky bass lines and catchy house rhythms. The DirtyBird camp will be taking over Corona Electric Beach on Sunday with Wiess, Codes, Walker & Royce, and Sacha Robotti. And to give Corona Beach a little flair, SMF changed it up slightly by adding D3V and Even Evolution, plus YehMe2 to the headlining spot for day 2. Both days with this special stage at Sunset Music Festival should satisfy all the house music needs for those house-heads out there in search of the groove.

Since this stage is sponsored by Corona Extra, only those attending SMF who are 21+ will be abele to partake in the activities at Corona Electric Beach. For more information on Corona Electric Beach at SMF, see the full set times schedule below. If you haven’t purchased your tickets for Sunset Music Festival 2018, there’s still time to do so. Head over to www.smftampa.com for information on how to purchase passes.

Sunset Music Festival 2018 Artist Spotlight: Crankdat

The journey to SMF Tampa continues as we are fast approaching Memorial Day weekend in just a few more weeks to go. Sunset Music festival will be hosting its annual two-day music festival. This highly anticipated lineup for Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida is stacked with some of the most highly sought after artists for 2018. Among the list of talent are some standout artists whom you should know a little more about. One of those acts in particular for this segment is the young producer and DJ, Crankdat.

Crankdat, otherwise known as Christian Smith is a 21 year-old producer from Cleveland, OH. The young producer has been making some big moves in dance music over the past couple of years. Once a division 1 track and field athlete at Kent State in Ohio, Smith was also producing music in his spare time as a student athlete. He soon decided to focus more time on his producing career than his sports career.

Crankdat is a well-rounded producer, and certainly has quite the catalogue of styles in his work as an artist. Crankdat’s initially broke into the scene by writing some remixes. One that gained the most attention early on was his remix of Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” in 2015. It quickly received millions of plays on SoundCloud, which that number has skyrocketed to a whopping 51 million currently.

Through the early stages of his official releases, Crankdat added his unique twist on several well-known names in the dance music industry including remixes of Skrillex & Wiwek “Killa,” San Holo’s massive hit “Light”, and Coolights and Graves, “Say Things.” Crankdat’s edit on “Say Things” has received a ton of attention across the festival circuit. Most of the early work of Crankdat still earns support from many DJ’s in the EDM industry, especially his edit of that Coolights and Graves track. We’ve included these tracks for your listening pleasure below, plus a few extras to enjoy as well.

Crankdat had been releasing consistently impressive remixes early, but his fans were eager to hear an original from the producer. During the summer of 2017, Crankdat finally released his debut single, “Dollars”. The future bass track embodied that unique style Crankdat displays in all of his productions. He uses elements of hip-hop and trap with some creative synth melodies that are really festival-friendly, which explains why his remixes and originals receive so much attention from DJ’s across the world.

Over the last 6 months, Crankdat has released a couple more original singles to beef up his repertoire. His catchy track, “Reasons To Run” is a more upbeat and bouncy melodic tune that has racked up over 400,000 plays on his official SoundCloud page. For the dubstep lovers, his track “Need You” is definitely catered towards the head bangers.

For those who are attending Sunset Music Festival 2018 in Tampa this Memorial Day weekend, Crankdat will be performing at the Eclipse stage on Sunday, May 27th from 7:00-8:00. If you are a fan of all forms of bass music like trap, dubstep, future bass, and even bass house, Crankdat should definitely be on your list of artists to see while attending SFM ’18. If you haven’t already purchased your tickets to SMF, you can do so by visiting SMFTampa.com for details on GA and VIP passes.

Chris Lake: Lose My Mind Tour Part II at Ritz Ybor, Tampa (Free Guest List)

House music fans in the Tampa Bay Area are in luck this weekend for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo festivities around the city of Tampa, FL. This Saturday, May 5th, of course, Ritz Ybor will be hosting a Cinco celebration with the thumping house tunes of none other than Chris Lake. And by the way, it’s a free guest list show (until 11pm)!

Sunset Events and Disco Donnie Presents, the force behind Tampa’s Sunset Music Festival, are hosting a special customer appreciation show to get fans ready for Sunset Music Festival 2018 with the Journey 2 Sunset Music Festival circuit. This event is a part 2 sequel of the Lose My Mind North American tour from late 2017 including headliner Chris Lake, and some talented local support from Ritz Ybor residents Christian Alexander & Lizzy Jane.

Although he has been a pioneer of many genres of dance music for nearly two decades, particularly in house music as of late, Chris Lake has consistently pushed his name to new heights in recent years and he’s still on the move. Fast forward to 2017, which was a huge year for the Grammy nominated producer. In January of 2017, he launched his new label, Black Book Records, where he debuted his hit single, “Operator” ft. Dances With White Girls, and it quickly took the scene by storm and earning it the title of the Holy Ship! anthem. Adding more fuel to the 4×4 flames Lake teamed up with Dances With White Girls once again with “Give Her Right Back.”

To cap off the last half of the breakout year for him, Chris Lake, came through with a massive track released on Insomniac Records with Chris Lorenzo, “Nothing Better,” which became a booty shaking house banger for months to come. It’s still one of our favorite house jams right now with those catchy vocals and deep bass heavy synths. Over the last year Lake’s groovy and funky beats have been moving dance floors all over the world, and he hasn’t put the brakes on yet. Last month, he delivered a romper tech house style tune once again on his Black Book Records label titled, “Lose My Mind,” that has been gaining tons of DJ support from big names in the house music realm of EDM. With loads of support for his tunes, and his keen talent to keep the room dancing as a DJ himself, Chris Lake is one of those must-see acts for this current season of live music.

With a plethora of new tunes that have blown the lid off of the house music scene in dance music for a couple of years now, don’t expect Chris Lake to go quietly any time soon. If you are a house music lover in Tampa, there should be no reason why you wouldn’t find yourself at Ritz Ybor this Saturday, especially since you can attend this show for free to see an incredibly talented DJ and producer like Chris Lake perform. You can put your name on the free guest list by posting an RSVP to the Facebook event page here: Chris Lake – Lose My Mind Tour Part II – Tampa, FL. You have up until 9PM the night of the show (Saturday) to secure your spot, and you must show up to check in by 11PM.

Add your names to the guest list before 9PM night of show to achieve special benefits! Post your name to the Facebook event page wall to be guest listed. You must tag your Facebook profile & list your name as it appears on your ID (if different), and you have to mark that you are ‘going’ to the event.

Halogen Releases New Single “Time” on Selected

The house music duo, Halogen, from Atlanta, Georgia is on track to have another great year of fresh tunes. After capping off an eventful 2017 with some groovy tracks like “Can’t Resist,” “U Got That,” and “Kid Again,” the boys are back again this spring with another classy deep house cut titled, “Time.” This was featured on the German based house music collective label, Selected.

The track embodies the unique style that Halogen has been developing over the past couple of years. “Time” starts off with a catchy synth melody that gradually builds into the vocals. You begin to feel immersed in the sense of a great house joint coming at you right away. They waste no time diving right into the groovy goodness of it all; and their shifty mixture of a calming yet funky bass line while the vocals and melody dance freely along with it makes this one of their top tier productions as of late. It drops into a beat that takes you through a whirl of emotion that will have you bobbing your head right along with the tune upon first listen.

You can easily be taken to a place where you feel most at ease with Halogen’s, “Time.” It’s one of those tracks that you just imagine yourself poolside on a nice weekend afternoon, or cruising through the city at night with the skyline in the backdrop. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate time of year for something like this to be released from Halogen. This one just goes hand in hand with a nice springtime environment. Take a listen, and it will most definitely be working its way into your house music playlists for this spring and summer. Be sure to add Halogen on all of your social accounts to follow up on what new and exciting things the duo has to offer this year.

You can hear “Time” by Halogen below. As an added bonus, you can also check out one of my favorite house music playlists on Spotify, which just happens to be created by Halogen as well called Housewerk.

Sunset Music Festival Releases Complete 2018 Lineup After Headliner Adjustment, Issues Apology to Fans

Sunset Music Festival has created a buzz in the Tampa Bay Area once again with another stout lineup delivery for the 2018 edition of the festival. Disco Donnie Presents and Sunset Events have teamed up with Heartbeat International to bring a jam-packed weekend for one of the regions most anticipated 2-day music festivals in sunny Tampa, Florida. The festival will take place on its usual dates of Memorial Day Weekend, May 26-27, with the backdrop of Tampa’s beloved Raymond-James Stadium.

The initial lineup announcement was originally released on March 27th, with a slew of talent that quickly received a lot of social interaction among Tampa Bay natives and the surrounding regions. Headliners included Marshmello, Excision, and The Chainsmokers. The festival will feature its signature three stage set up with the Sunset Stage for the main, and Horizon and Eclipse for the side stages. Some of the main acts for Eclipse and Horizon stages are Destructo, Atrak b2b YehMe2, Borgore, and Joyride, plus many more to boot.

This will be the sixth installment of the 2-day EDM festival occurring on Memorial Day Weekend. Sunset Music Festival has become a household name in the live music dance events for the state of Florida, and for most of the east coast as well. According to a Beacon report study, the festival has stimulated the local Tampa economy immensely in the past for the Memorial Day Weekend tourism to the Hillsborough and Pinellas county areas. More than 50,000 dance music fans have walked through the gates in recent years, and SMF should aim for similar numbers again.

Although the folks behind Sunset Music Festival have been able to deliver a top-tier lineup for several years, they were not able to deliver a 100% complete lineup this time around. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the festival was unable to announce a headliner who was originally on the bill, The Chainsmokers. Promotions manager, Alex Schamback, took to Facebook to apologize to SMF fans in a statement concerning the sudden change in the lineup.

The festival quickly made moves to add in two more names to the headliner spots to make up for having to cross the The Chainsmokers off of the lineup. Over the course of the past few days, SMF introduced headliners, Illenium and Rezz. While they are not as massive of a brand such as The Chainsmokers, this tweak to the lineup should be able to resonate positively with the Sunset festivalgoers.

Now that the full lineup is finally in place after that unexpected switch, the set times are ready to go as well. Below are the complete lineup and set times for the Memorial Day Weekend festivities at Raymond-James Stadium in Tampa. If you have not yet purchased your tickets, you can still do so by visiting SMFTampa.com/tickets.

Iris Presents to Kick Off Brand New Music Venue with Headliners Crizzly and COCODRILLS

The founders of Atlanta’s own Imagine Music Festival, Glenn and Madeline Goodhand, have teamed up with an Atlanta and Miami nightclub owner, Mahesh Harjani, to bring something big for the local Atlanta music scene- a brand new home for Iris Presents.

The two driving forces behind the growth of Imagine Music Festival into one of the regions largest camping EDM festivals are launching a fresh and exciting expansion of Atlanta’s growing live music market. This is big news for Atlanta’s music scene.

Located in the heart of Downtown Atlanta at the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. and Central Avenue, sits the large 15,000-square-foot Romanesque style church. This will be the new and permanent home to Iris Presents and their beloved ESP 101 [Learn To Believe] events, which will be called the Believe Music Hall. This iconic structure once housed the upscale restaurant/bar & lounge, Museum Bar, and before that it was a church that was hosted by Rev. Martin Luther King Sr.

The newly renovated Believe Music Hall will feature three event spaces with a mezzanine that will overlook the main stage area, an “underground” stage in the basement, private VIP rooms, two outdoor terraces, incredible light and laser production, and a massive Danley and Turbo sound rig. If you thought that was enough, there will also be a superfood restaurant included to top it all off.

Glenn Goodhand spoke with The AJC on his historical ties with the building that is his new home for Iris Presents. It served as one of the first venues in the beginning stages of Iris Presents ESP 101 [Learn To Believe] events. “It’s incredible how it all came full circle from when we first started some of our ESP 101 [Learn to Believe] events here more than 20 years ago,” Glenn Goodhand said. “First, we had to learn to believe, then we imagined, now we believe.”

Iris Presents will kick things off at Believe Music Hall on April 14th with the dupstep and trap producer/dj Crizzly headlining. Supporting local talent include Eddie Gold, Ployd, Teriyaki Noize, and Tech This Out Cru! For those groovy four-on-the-floor house lovers the Underground Stage at Believe Music Hall will feature Miami natives, Coco Drills, with local support from Alex Lucas and Vivid. This will be the start of something fresh and exciting for the Atlanta music scene, and it was certainly a long time coming. The first tier of pre-sale tickets have already sold out, so snag them now before it is too late! To purchase your tickets, visit the Iris Presents Eventbrite here.

Imagine Music Festival Brings The Heat in Second Year at Atlanta Motor Speedway

Wow, Imagine, just simply… Wow! That is the only word that I can use to describe the second installment of the newly revamped Imagine Music Festival. Since last year was the inaugural event for this festival expanding to 3-days and adding camping to the mix, the bumps along the way, while some were expected, raised a few concerns among Imagine’s festival attendees. There were some good aspects of the 2016 Imagine Festival that folks recognized, but there were also a few areas that needed some evaluation for improvement from 2016 going into the 2017 year. Imagine gracefully took those obstacles in stride, and handled this year’s festival with poise and a confidence that gave them a totally new look and atmosphere this time around. One would like to believe that the fans certainly noticed the improvements as well.

As someone who attended each IMF since the beginning stages, I can tell you that I, too, noticed some areas of improvement that enhanced my overall experience while at the festival. Upon arriving to the speedway, which having the option to come in a day early made this much more enjoyable, we were able to easily set up our campsite and get prepared for the weekend festivities. Having that extra day to get set up and ready to go is a must-have, in my opinion. It was great not having the rushed feeling to get the campsite set up in time to be able to enjoy some good sets like arriving the day of like last year. The extra day also gives people time to get more acquainted with the grounds, the market place and food vendors, and the other amenities to enjoy throughout the weekend. Kudos to Imagine for adding the “early bird” arrival camping options for those looking to attend.

For the aesthetics of the festival, I give them a bravo for being much improved on that end of the spectrum. This year, everything inside the venue was properly marked and amenities were easy to locate. The overall look of the festival was night and day compared to 2016, which was a great takeaway. Aside from a few hiccups the festival saw as a whole, the event went well from my observing point of view. There were maps readily available, helpful staff members to get you pointed in the right direction, and plenty of free water that was easy to locate around the festival grounds. This was a much better improvement from last year. There were a few problems that ensued, which is expected when you have tens of thousands of people to deal with coming through the gates each day. The lines were a little congested, leaving attendees waiting exceptionally long wait times to get inside the festival. Luckily, IMF took the obstacle in stride and opened up an additional entrance to help alleviate the wait times. In my opinion, I believe that this second entrance should have been in the original plans due to the sheer amount of Imaginers walking through the gates of the venue. We think that this will certainly be addressed for next year’s festival, believe us.

Let’s talk about the noteworthy stages and standout performances for Imagine Festival 2017. As for the main stage, Oceania, what a fantastic lineup from days 1-3! It had a wonderful mix of the top DJs of bass, electro, house, and even a little trance thrown in. The atmosphere was impeccable and the sets made for a great time at that stage. Some of the biggest sets from Oceania were MK, Illenium, Above & Beyond, and the legendary, Deadmau5. I think the only negative I had from that stage was that the sound was a little lacking if you weren’t in the dead center of the speakers at the stage to get the full sound production. If you were on the sides, the sound seemed to be at a lower volume, and it was missing that “oomph” factor.

The Amazonia stage was off to its own on the other side of the venue, nestled next to turn 1 and 2 on the speedway. The stage was eclectic and was home to a wide range of genres with some big performances from Big Gigantic, STS9 and Pretty Lights. The stage had that “trippy” feel to it, and the whole aura of the stage’s environment made you feel like you were in a separate world from the rest of the festival.

Last, but not least, my absolute favorite stage of the weekend was Disco Inferno. It was possibly one of the top stages of the entire festival from the production to sets across the board. I have been waiting for a festival in the south to bring a heavy hitting house music lineup like this one, and boy did IMF deliver some heat, literally! Both Saturday and Sunday was just full of some dirty and grimy house tunes. Chris Lake laid down some rompers as the sun set on Saturday evening, which paved the way for the rest of the weekend’s house festivities. Nora En Pure gave fans a new feel to the house genre, bringing her unique style of an indie dance and deep house blend. Her laidback tone was a great set up for the rest of the weekend for house music fans at Imagine for sure.

As for Sunday on the Disco Inferno stage at IMF… Oh my, what a damn party that was! The Dirtybird Players came in on Sunday and absolutely destroyed that stage from the open to close. Ciszak set the pace with his rump-shaking Brazilian twist, playing some heavy bass lines and some groovy deeper tunes. When Will Clarke took the decks, oh my lanta, what a show that was! There’s not much that I can say about that set as I feel like he laid everything he had out on the crowd at Disco Inferno. This man was laying down more flames than the flamethrowers behind the stage, and we all know that those damn things were just about singing everyone’s faces by day 3! I believe that the stage was nothing more than a metaphor for what these DJ’s performing at Disco Inferno were delivering last weekend, which was pure flames.

The main attraction of the night on Disco Inferno was Mr. Dirtybird himself, Claude Vonstroke. My goodness, what a set this man laid down for Imagine on day 3. It was a magnificent sight to see the fans spilling over to Disco Inferno after the whole festival shutdown following the Above & Beyond set at the main stage. I looked up and saw a sea of people making their way to Disco Inferno as Claude was playing his set, and was amazed at the amount of people who stayed to see him close out the festival. There must have been about 5k Imaginers crammed into that small grassy area that made up the Disco Inferno stage, including the grandstands of AMS. Claude’s set was absolutely insane! He played some classic Dirtybird hits along with some other dance floor romping house tunes. I couldn’t have thought up a better way to close out Imagine Festival than having the Dirtybird headmaster delivering some booty shaking music.

Aside from a few mishaps and long wait times to get into the festival, I believe that Imagine Music Festival took the obstacles from 2016 in stride and gave us a wonderful festival to remember. This was a night and day comparison from their first installment as a 3-day camping festival at a new venue. The atmosphere, vibes, amenities, and overall aura of the festival were nothing short of amazing at IMF. The music was just icing on the cake to what Imagine had to offer for its 2017 edition. After witnessing the turnaround Imagine has been able to make for this year, we are totally pumped for what is in store for Imagine Music Festival in 2018 and years to come. We are proud of the hard work that Iris Presents and the others involved have put in to bring us a festival that can easily be considered one of the top-tier music festivals of the southeastern region of the country. Well done, Imagine! We will definitely be seeing you next year.
