Exclusive Interview With Felix Cartal

The electronic music scene has seen an explosion of brand new talent come along over the past couple of years. There is a large number of producers within this industry who end up defining themselves by the genres they produce. Many of which seem to follow what’s trending in order to stay relevant rather than finding what fits them the best. One of the few producers out there refuses to follow the trend route is Felix Cartal. This Canadian producer has been around in the dance music world for quite some time, almost 10 years to be exact. Throughout all this time, Felix has managed to keep himself among the top tier of producers over years with his unique style. Coining the genre Big Room Pop, Felix decided to create a new sound no one had heard before. This also helped preserve his tracks so that they keep their value for a long period of time. Having the chance to chat with Felix when he recently visited Atlanta was quite refreshing. He had some interesting viewpoints like his stance on EDM as a whole, how to stay relevant in this cut throat industry, and his dislike for trend jumping.

Let’s start off with your music past. It appears that you were in a rock band before producing dance music?

It began as a punk rock band. I think it was just because that’s all we were capable of playing at the time. I mean, we were young and had shitty visions. Then it just ended up forming into this prog rock, maybe noise rock. Then towards the end it went a little more towards pop; and then we just broke up.

What was your reason for breaking up?

College pretty much made everything difficult for us. So we had to call it quits essentially.

After splitting with your band, what was the transition of going from punk rock to dance music?

Right around the time before our band ended, we started experimenting with electronic music. We just made beats on stage and playing to beats, and then having interludes on stage as well. I pretty much enjoyed just messing around with it at first. So when the band broke up, I just figured maybe this could be my new outlet for music.

If given the opportunity, would you go back and play in a band again?

There’s definitely aspects of being in a band that I miss. Traveling with friends, writing with other people, and playing an instrument. Organizing a bigger group of people whenever you want to play / write music is really tough though. I’d love to be a part of a touring band for a small tour I think, not sure if i could go through the stress of starting another one.

You call your style of music ‘Big Room Pop’. That’s something you don’t hear every day. Did you come up with that?

Yeah! It was something I came up with. I feel like there’s a sense of negativity within the scene around pop, and I wanted to just own it.

You’ve been making music for many years now. What is the key to staying relevant in this constantly changing industry?

A huge part of it is just challenging yourself. It’s almost like this weird combination of being aware of what’s changing around you and how well you can adapt. Also find a way to not be a trend jumper is another way to keep relevant. For example the deep house trend. Like I can reference that, but I’m not going to just start putting out deep house because it’s what’s hot. I think if you’re actually honest behind a record, I do believe that it comes through in the end. Which is why I love writing my own music.

Do you feel that by changing things up with your music, does it keep you somewhat separated from the majority of producers today?

I don’t know about that. I think lots of artists have a varied catalogue and are taking risks, you just have to find them because they are definitely out there.

After hours of producing, what does Felix find himself doing to clear his mind?

*laughs*

You know, I actually like to play squash. I love to just get exercise any way I can because that really helps out. I am also an adventurous foodie. So I am constantly searching for a new spot with crazy different food. I mean, places that have unusual foods that I’ve never heard of before.

When you last visited Atlanta, did you take a moment and check out the city at all?

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any time this trip! I was bummed out because I really wanted to go to magic city!

I want to go back to something. Earlier when I asked about adapting to EDM trends, you said “Ignoring EDM is a start.” Could you elaborate on that? Are you not a fan of the EDM umbrella term?

To me “EDM” has a certain sound now, I feel like it describes a sort of big room type music, just like how dutch house has a sound, or fidget, or deep house or whatever. As a producer I think describing a ‘type of music’ as Electronic in 2015 is a bit of a dated idea, because virtually everything we hear on the radio, etc, is electronic. I love what the dance music scene brings, and I love being a part of that culture, it’s super positive and supportive, but I think describing yourself as an EDM artist in an attempt to be different from other styles of producers is backwards. Everyone is an electronic producer.

TomorrowWorld Says They Are Not To Blame For Terrible Conditions

Last weekend, TomorrowWorld lost its Key to Happiness to Mother Nature and it never returned. Rain, rain, and more rain throughout the weekend caused terrible conditions for the grounds of Chattahoochee Hills, Ga. The once beautiful Bouckaert Farm quickly turned into a giant mud pit by Friday evening, and only got worse as the weekend progressed. With media outlets, as well as massive amounts of people on social media sending a hailstorm of negative feedback concerning the way TonmorrowWorld handled everything, a PR spokesperson responded yesterday. To many, this came as a surprise that they didn’t take any blame whatsoever for what happened.

Spokesperson Debby Wilmsen, who represents TomorrowWorld and TomorrowLand was interviewed by BBC Radio 1 on the issue. She quickly blamed everything else besides the festival and its organizers. These statements might be a little tough to read in some spots. They have been translated from Dutch to English via Google Translate.

It is normal that the tents are wet when it rains five days. There you can as an organization not do anything. That people have far to walk, has to do with the size of the premises. The distances are simply enormous, even in dry weather they would have to step away. It’s no different in Belgium… Many people no longer wanted to wait and begin walking on their own, and they got lost in the woods around Chattahoochee Hills. It is rural America, there is no transport and who does not know his way, soon gets lost.

We have done the same as in Belgium. We have hay and wood bark scattered and some parts covered with mats. Chattahoochee Hills is a huge site, we can not completely [make] full set of ramps. It also just kept raining. You can put hay but it will at some point still [get] too wet. And you can not put coverings over 40,000 tents.

Thousands of attendees who were not part of Dreamville camping were forced to walk up to 10 miles to get back to their vehicles in order to get back home. During this long walk, the rain still continued and the temperature was nothing but comfortable. According to the TomorrowWorld spokesperson, this was just a small amount out of the 190,000 fans who were in attendance at the festival. Regardless of that statistic, that small number of people still matter as well as the others.

[The US media] focus primarily on what they see via social media visitors. It is also about a small percentage of the visitors… It’s not fun to read on social media how many people are dissatisfied, but on the other hand, there are many more people who have had a very good time.

Wilmsen did, however, admit that there was a failed communication during the festival. She hopes that the mishap does not tarnish the brand. Though it looks like there will be a bad taste in everyone’s mouth for a long time. The festival did apologize for any of the misfortune that the attendees had to endure throughout the weekend. TomorrowWorld also released a statement regarding refunds for any thing to do with Sunday passes as well as parking, but not for anyone who stayed in Dreamville.

Imagine Music Festival Returns to Atlanta

The bar was raised again for the latest Imagine Music Festival, a two-day EDM festival that returned to Atlanta. The event again took place August 29-30, 2015 in Atlanta’s Masquerade Music Park. The Masquerade Music Park was combined with the recently constructed Old Fourth Ward Park next door making a unique, centrally-located experience in Atlanta for those in attendance.

FYER Crew Member Assaulted at Backwoods Music Festvial

A shocking turn of events at Backwoods Camping & Music Festival in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has caused the duo FYER to withdraw from performing at the festival today. The group reported via a Facebook post that the duo’s artist and film crew was assaulted by overly aggressive security officer upon leaving the festival grounds Saturday night.

This assault culminated with the FYER tour manager being sliced on the arm with a blade wielded by said officer, requiring hospitalization in the ER and several stitches. For this reason FYER believes it is best to withdraw from today’s performance.

According to the post, there was also camera footage of the alleged attack. As for now, the video is being withheld per legal council. This is something that an artist or crew members should ever have to endure, and quite frankly, completely unacceptable. Security is paid to do one job, and that is to ensure the safety of everyone in the festival. For one thing, what in the hell is a security officer doing inside a music festival with a weapon such as a knife in the first place? That’s something that should never happen at all. No one should ever have to worry about being assaulted by someone who is paid to protect.

FYER has every right to be upset and retract from playing at this festival. The safety of the artists and crew members are top priority no matter what. Festivals really need to do a better job with making sure that their employees are actually going to do their jobs, and not physically attack people for no justifiable reason. Backwoods Music Festival is very fortunate that this attack did not result in any further injury or death to the victim or anyone else involved. We truly hope that the festival takes responsibility for these actions by its security staff. This person is clearly dangerous, and should not be in charge of the safety of festival goers and artists.

Unfortunately FYER will not be performing today at BackwoodsFestival as previously scheduled. Last night upon leaving…

Mad Decent Block Party 2015 – Atlanta, Ga.

On Friday, July 31st, the one and only Mad Decent Block Party began their 2 month tour around nation. There’s no better city that comes to mind to kick the party off just right than the good old ATL. This was the one of a kind block party’s third year in a row here in the city of Atlanta. Each year the MDBP has come to Atlanta, the block party brings a jam-packed lineup along with drawing a huge crowd.

Mad Decent brought in Keys N Krates, Major Lazer, Meaux Green, Shiba San, TWRK, Yellow Claw, and Zeds Dead for this year’s party. The event was held at one of my absolute favorite music venues in the whole city, The Masquerade Music Park. The location and scenery makes it perfect for any outdoor music event. Plus, the amphitheater’s backdrop being the cities beautiful skyline just enhances the experience even more.

Although starting the event at 2 in the afternoon seemed somewhat early, it still didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the music. The Georgia heat during the peak of summer can be a little overwhelming at times if you aren’t careful. The folks working for MDBP did a great jot combating the heat with having plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated as well as utilizing water hoses to cool off everyone among the pit with some refreshing mist. Crowd safety is crucial for events, especially when they are during the day and the temp is about 90° outside. Kudos to the Mad Decent staff for making sure everyone was safe and hydrated throughout the show.

A few of my favorite sets from the party were Shiba San, Keys N Krates, and Zeds Dead. Until Mad Decent Block Party, I hadn’t got the chance to see Shiba San live before and I absolutely loved his performance. His selection of house music was on point. Out of the many times that I’ve seen Keys N’ Krates, they have yet to disappoint me. I have always enjoyed catching their sets simply because of their unique style with using drums and keyboard to play their music. Zeds Dead turned the crowd’s energy way up with their multi-genre set. I’ll try to catch Zeds Dead when I can just because they play all sorts of different genres. One minute they’ll drop some heavy bass dubstep, then somehow mix in some deep house plus some trap and even a little moombah as well.

The Mad Decent Block Party tour just finished up in Ft. Lauderdale, Philadelphia, and Brooklyn. After a short break, the tour will continue to 14 other cities across the U.S. Check out the whole list of upcoming dates below, the Mad Decent Block Party could be coming to a city near you.

Why Instagram Removed The Hashthag #EDM

DJ duo, The Chainsmokers :: Drew Taggart, 24, and Alex Pall, 28, made a demo of a dancefloor thumper titled "#Selfie" the-chainsmokers-selfie-650.jpg

News has spread like wildfire around social media and blogs about the sudden removal of #EDM from Instagram earlier today. The ban has caused many to believe that it was in result of the recent deaths that occurred during HARD Summer that were allegedly drug-related. Even a petition on Change.org was created with people of the EDM community urging the company to reinstate the hashtag.

According to a recent post from THUMP, the real reason that the hashtag has been removed is not exactly what people are speculating. In the article, THUMP explains that they were emailed by a spokesperson from Instagram, telling them that:

“We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines. In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity… We’re also working on ways to better communicate our policies around hashtags.”

This actually holds merit, because there are some dark corners of Instagram with some photos that are not anywhere near appropriate for a social media platform. But hey, with millions for photos being posted per day on Instagram, it’s next to impossible to police it at all times. This is why the easiest thing to do for the company is just to remove a hashtag from being used all together until the situation can be resolved. Just a month ago, the hashtag #curvy was removed as well. But Instagram was slammed with outrage that it was ridding a term that is widely accepted in society, so the hashtag was brought back and is now moderated.

In essence, the likelihood of the very popular hashtag being removed in result of the recent deaths at HARD Summer is not plausible. Although it seems like a perfectly good reason why the hashtag was banned with the recent tragedies that have occurred, it’s just an unfortunate coincidence. Now you might be thinking, “Why aren’t any sexually explicit or drug related hashtags banned?” The explanation is quite clear, actually- popularity. Those “bad” hashtags don’t even compare to the amount of photos that were posted under #EDM. The reason that photos containing nudity or any other illegal content were being posted using #EDM is because the hashtag was so damn popular. I mean, that hashtag was in the 10’s of millions in the photo count. Literally anything was being posted using that hashtag. Photos that had absolutely nothing to do with the EDM community were included under it. People were taking advantage of it and posting anything and everything under it. So it comes as to no surprise that a large number of photos that do not meet Instagram’s standards would show up.

We can all rest easy that Instagram doesn’t actually hate EDM or anything like that. If they really wanted to ban the hashtag for any reason other than what they gave, then all variation hashtags would be gone as well. The hashtag could come back, though there has been no statement as of yet from Instagram regarding the future of #EDM. If the hashtag does come back, be prepared for the it to be moderated just like the #curvy hashtag reinstatement.
