Exclusive Interview with Sick Individuals

Sick Individuals are a house music duo from the Netherlands that have really made a name for themselves over the last couple of years. They were first discovered by Hardwell and were signed to his very own Revealed Recordings label, which has grown exponentially since its birth in 2010. Sick Individuals consists of two producers by the names of Joep “Jim” Smeele and Rinze “Ray” Hofstee. The two have traveled all over the world, playing at several major music festivals and big time club venues. They have also worked with many high-profile artists such as Dannic, Hardwell, Axwell, and W&W, just to name a few. I had the pleasure of being able to interview just one half of the Sick Individuals duo, Jim Smeele, when he came to play here in Atlanta at Havana Night Club.

Is this your first time playing solo as Sick Individuals without your partner Ray?

Yes, actually. I miss him very much. He has not been feeling well, so he could not make it to the show tonight. He’s a real sick individual, if you know what I mean! [Chuckles at his pun]

Let’s talk a little about before you two became Sick Individuals. What were you doing then?

I met Ray while we were in art school, and we just started making music together in the beginning. We ran a little company together making music for TV commercials like McDonalds, Audi, and other big companies like that. That’s how we made our money to pay for studio equipment.

That’s how it all started for you two?

Yes, exactly! One night we began making house music just for fun. We decided to send our work out to some labels and they picked it up very quickly. At first, we were on a much smaller label, but then Hardwell discovered us and that’s how we got signed to Revealed Recordings. Now we are releasing music on that label constantly.

With all these new trending styles in electronic music, how does Sick Individuals plan to adapt with the changes?

That’s a good question. A lot of DJ’s around me are asking the same thing. The harder sounds are not as popular, but we never really went for the mainstream EDM sounds. For us, we have always had the groove in our music. I think the groove is definitely coming back for sure. The really aggressive sounds are honestly only for festivals now and not as much for the club. We are really okay with that. We don’t consider our style as aggressive at all so we won’t have to change much.

With that being said, do you prefer playing in a club or festival environment?

After each winter season, I always say that I want to do another festival again. Then I enjoy playing festivals during the spring and even summer months. But later in the year, I always like to play in the clubs. I think the combination of both keeps it interesting. But if I had to choose only one, I would have to pick a festival. They are so fun to play at! The clubs do make more of an intimate environment so you can be closer to the fans and you can also play more freely.

Are you currently working on some new club sounding music?

Right now we are working on some new radio material, so that is a bit different for us. I think over the next half year, you can expect to hear some new radio production coming out as well as some more club sounding records that have some groove and are a bit more melodic. I’m excited to get some new music out there.

You guys have teamed up with many big names in electronic music like Dannic, Hardwell, Axwell, and others, who has been the most fun to work with in the studio?

The most exciting for us would be Axwell, because he is like a hero to us and we love Swedish House Mafia. To work with him was such a big honor. As for the most fun, I think it would have to be Dannic. We know him really well and we are the same age. So we became friends over time and we’ve even toured together. We would spend a lot of time together and make great music, of course. I think next year we will do another collab because we work so well together. I think ‘Blueprint’ went number 1 for a minute.

That’s good to hear! Blueprint is one of my favorite tracks from you guys.

Yes! It is one of my favorites too. I still enjoy playing it. That was actually our first release on Revealed.

When you are playing a set, whether it is a festival or club, what is that one song you are just excited and amped up to play for the crowd?

Honestly, it’s usually a new song. I always get excited to play one of our newest releases or a track that we have just finished. ‘Drive’ is now out on Revealed Recordings which gets great reaction. Also we have another new track with DBSTF coming out in January of next year. I get excited to see the crowd’s reaction to our new tracks.

I saw you guys play at TomorrowWorld in September. Great set by the way! I remember hearing you say that you liked hardstyle on the mic, and you played some for the crowd. It’s interesting that you like hardstyle. I feel like it doesn’t get a lot of love, and it’s something that EDM fans don’t quite understand yet.

That was actually Ray who said that. He is usually always on the mic, so I never really have to say much. And yes, I do love hardstyle. I think we played the hardstyle remix of ‘Blueprint’. Hardstyle is fun because there’s a lot of energy and it’s very aggressive.

Besides producing house music, are there any other genres that you would like to try just for fun?

I would say trap music. It is actually really fun to make. It’s all about the production as well. I think that with trap music, it has that wow factor because of those heavy sounds. I’ve never made it myself, but I have a friend who produces trap music so I get to play around with it a little. I noticed that people really like that kind of music here too.

So tell me a little about ADE. It’s like the mecca of the electronic music industry, mainly on the European spectrum of EDM. How awesome is it to be part of that?

It’s getting more awesome every year. It’s really good for the business side of things. For networking, it is great because literally everyone is there. Now ADE is becoming more important because everybody comes together. Like EVERY big DJ is there for that party. There are tons of announcements and new releases from producers. When we first started going, it was a lot of just walking around and networking with people and trying to give our demos to anyone we could. Now we are doing more interviews there and we’re getting to play more shows.

Having it in Amsterdam must be really fun because it’s close to home.

Yes, that’s what makes it fun because it is so small. The clubs are not very big there, and guys like Tiesto, Hardwell, and Martin Garrix will come through and play at some small venues which which is really cool. It’s just one big party with everyone there.

Take me through an ideal day in the life of Jim Smeele of Sick Individuals.

Wake up early in the morning around 9. For around the first hour or two, I’d like to be alone to gather myself and soak in the new day. Of course, have a nice breakfast to get started. Go to the gym and work out for an hour, because you have to get the blood flowing. Then I would go to the studio for a few hours and finish that off with a good lunch, maybe with some friends. Then go back to the studio and complete a new record. A great day for me is if I can do something creative. It makes me happy when I know that I’ve done something creative for the day.

Lastly, I’ve been curious to know where you got the name Sick Individuals. How did you come up with that name?

It started with three people in the beginning. He was always an MC with us. Every show we did he would shout into the mic, “Are you ready for a new sick record?!” Or, “These guys are sick!” He would even say, “These guys are true sick individuals!” So he was always using those words to describe us. Then other DJ’s started calling us that and they would tell us that we were sick. So that’s how it became our name. We liked that because we wanted something to signify us as a group and not our actual names as a duo.

Day for Night Festival 2015

As 2015 comes to a close, Houston kicked off the Pre-Christmas festivities with Day for Night Fest by Free Press! Day for Night is a two day art and music festival with a variety of world class musicians as well as leaders in various disciplines of digital art. The event took place on December 19-20, 2015 in Houston’s Silver Street Studios. Silver Street is an arts and event complex that includes 20,000 square foot event space and 70 creative studios; a perfect place for the digital art installations making the experience very unique and entertaining.

Free Press is well-known for hosting their Free Press Summer Fest in Houston during the hottest days of the summer. The winter sister of FPSF, Day for Night Fest, was first announced in early October. After a disappointing Something Wicked, Houston had a chance to redeem itself with good weather for Day for Night. Normally festival goers wouldn’t be too worried about the weather for any outdoor winter festival, but not in the Deep South! Lucky for us Texans, December has been feeling pretty mild this year. You could even get by with a light jacket.

The venue was very spacious, nestled within the quaint local neighborhoods. Although, It wasn’t difficult to find parking in the surrounding neighborhoods. With the way everything was set up, it felt more like a large art installation with a music festival within it instead of vice versa. Day for Night really immerses the festival goers into another world filled with light and creativity. It felt like the entire festival was putting you in a trance-like hypnosis and meditation. Inside the main exhibition hall, visual artists displayed their site-specific installations using light, sound, 3D rendering, and projections to create 20ft. tall interactive pieces. The main stage, Red Stage, was beautifully created with the simplicity of half circles on each side of the stage in opposite directions. They represent the day and the night. Nothing makes me happier than geometrical shapes.

Kamil Nawearthil’s projection of tiny globules undergoing mitosis was magical and vibrant in color. The marquee installation was truly the talk of the town. Created by Nonotak Studio, VOLUME, was an enormous square grid of metal beams interlocked with each other across a warehouse the length of a football field. A series of sharp percussions and deep bass created a light show that was both dizzying and mesmerizing. In one moment, it felt like time stood still. Then the next would move very quickly.

Saturday was a calming day; ending with New Order’s only US live show and their return to Texas since 1989. New Order was silhouetted against a kaleidoscopic array of graphics and visual effects that enhanced the live set to the nth degree. After New Order’s set ended, thousands of people were still lost in their own world as they continued to relax and enjoy the groovy, carpeted dance floor.

Sunday rolled around with even warmer winds and cloudy skies. I revisited my favorite art installations and enjoyed the lights again before I hopped over to the Green Stage which was nestled inside a repurposed warehouse. The noise bounced off the walls and in pitch darkness, as the graphics danced on the warehouse walls. Dillon Francis controlled the entire warehouse; opening his set with some bells to set the holiday mood before exploding into a heavy hitting bass remix of, “When We Were Young”. The night was filled funny graphics, moombahton tracks, and head banging fans. Dillon even dropped his flipped version of Skrillex’s remix, “Red Lips”.

I left the stuffy warehouse, and was met with a cool Texas breeze which was immediately refreshing. Kendrick Lamar blew away the crowd with a relaxed, acoustic set of his hits. His words transfixed the crowd to a state of awe. “M.A.D.D. City” was beautifully done but the showstopper was when he performed “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”. Lamar even invited up a few fans from the crowd to rap the lyrics live on stage. The first contender was too good to be true. He was perfect, a fitting image of a crunk white man who was living the dream on stage. His rhythm and melody flowed very well as he freestyle rapped the entire time. It was so good that it felt like it was a planned part of the act. This unscripted cameo from this Houstonian made him a hometown hero.

Overall, Free Press took a risk for a winter festival and succeeded. The weather played along for the weekend and the stages were just magnificent. All in all, it was a very chill festival; a laidback twin of Free Press Summer Fest. Day for Night really appealed to the inner artist in me, and I certainly believe that it was a festival that nobody saw coming.

Dillon Francis Announces Collab With Porter Robinson

Dillon Francis has had a break out year releasing tons of new music and performing all over the world. He has collabed with tons of big time producers in EDM including Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Bro Safari, and even Kygo. Francis just premiered two huge new collabs with NGHTMRE and Alesso at the IDGAFOS in LA last Friday. Now it appears that he is working on another collab with none other than Porter Robinson. Today Francis tweeted Robinson, saying that they should make a song together and that it was well overdue.

This tweet prompted a wave of positive reaction from fans. So Dillon then tweets a request to his followers for 5k retweets and he would produce a track with Porter Robinson. Of course this got the 5k retweets plus raking up to a total of over 7k retweets in just a few hours span. Then Francis states that they are now planning on what they are going to do.

With that came a bit of mixed emotions with the breaking news of the future collab. Some of which were not very pleased with the idea. One negative response in particular received the best possible rebuttal from Francis.

Most people are speculating that this could finally be the birth of Soon U, the spoof between Francis and Robinson making fun of Skrillex and Diplo’s, Jack U. At this point, we only know that the two are definitely discussing working on a track together which is awesome news alone.

BUKU Goes Out With A Bang In Atlanta

At 1 AM last Saturday, Robert Balotsky, best known as his stage name BUKU, laid out the final set of his 2015 fall tour on the Iris mainstage at Rush Lounge. This guy knows his skill, and makes trap and bass music you can feel from your head to the floor. It was a ridiculously grimy (and hot) set made by a man who gracefully slides from one beat to the next. He was living it up and so was the crowd. Buku brought out his fancy work, playing his top tracks: “All Deez”, “Janky,” and his singles from back in June, “Might Be,” and “Freaknik.” His production and style reflects the performer you get to watch on stage. He played with the crowd and was smiles all night, aside from the occasional bass face moments.

BUKU has truly been on a roll this year. Three new singles in June, a hot list of festivals under his belt including Imagine Music Festival here in Atlanta, and a tour across the states from Seattle to his home in Pittsburgh. Not to mention, his recent banger mix of the GRiZ hit, “For the Love” is a dancefloor destroyer. BUKU obviously enjoys what he does and does it extremely well. Come 2016, he is bound to make more heads turn as he sets out fire with a back to back set with G. Jones at Wobbleland in February. Check out what he has in store and where you can see him next. Get weird with BUKU.

R.L. Grime Lights Up Kingdom Rave Christmas

Last Friday, Henry Steinway, aka R.L. Grime, took the Imperial Ballroom to ‘a galaxy far far away’. The hype was intense inside the plaza and it seemed like everyone was eagerly anticipating his set. The venue was packed out from back to front, and the production made it feel like we had somehow made it on the next space ship to the moon! Grime threw down his best yet, opening up with an intense build up and a dark stage. Needless to say, he made his presence known and the set just built up from there. Grime played just about everything from his 2014 album, “Void”. He also sprinkled in his well-known remixes like his twist on the classic hit, “Satisfaction” by Benny Benassi, and his latest touch on, “The Hills” from The Weeknd, which was a definite crowd favorite. R.L. Grime is well known for his trap fluidity, and has remained at the top of the game with his ferocious style.

The Kingdom Rave family did a fantastic job with the entire night. Out of the many venues in Atlanta, the production set in the Imperial Ballroom of Live Oak Plaza was by far the best we’ve seen. It made a huge difference for the experience as a whole by grabbing your attention right away and pulling your eyes in one direction- straight at the main stage. It really makes for a more intimate and personal experience when you can watch a high energy DJ like R.L. Grime get down to his own set right along with the crowd. That truly creates an energy between the music and the people that can sometimes be overlooked at other shows.

What is next on the books for R.L. Grime? The man is on the move, continuing his ‘Void’ tour around the world into 2016. The next time R.L. Grime comes back down to the south will be at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival in Florida, March 4-6. Until then, take a peek at this music video of his song, “Valhalla” and Grime on!
