Steve Angello Donates $5,000 to Family For Liver Transplant

It’s always great feeling when you discover a feel-good story on the internet amidst all the usual drama that’s posted every day by media outlets. It’s unfortunate that there are more negative stories out there than positive within the music industry. Though it is quite refreshing when a story such as this occurs which warms your heart and slightly restores your hope in humanity. Just a few days ago, a GoFundMe page was created by the father of Allie Drivas, a two-month old baby girl who had been diagnosed with a deadly liver disease. In just a couple of days, the family had received over $5,000 in donations from friends and family and a large outreach of support via social media.

At two months old, Allie was diagnosed with the liver disease Biliary Atresia. If left untreated, children with this disease do not typically make it past 2-3 years old. The first step in her journey to recovery was the Kasai surgical procedure, in which part of her small intestine was connected to her liver to allow proper bile drainage . Unfortunately after a few months of close monitoring post surgery, the Kasai was deemed unsuccessful. Allie’s liver is still not functioning properly and her condition will worsen with time. Her only chance at survival is liver transplantation. Kaiser has transferred Allie to Children’s Hospital LA. They have evaluated her and she is currently being placed on the liver transplant list. Please help us fund the money to cover her medical expenses. We want to thank you for all of the support, love and prayers you have been sending our way!

On the afternoon of Thursday, June 25th, the Drivas family was received some overwhelming news via Instagram. Allie’s father had left a comment on one of former Swedish House Mafia member, Steve Angello‘s Instagram photo, asking him to check out Allie’s GoFundMe page. Within just a few minutes he responded that he would do so, and he donated $5,000 to Allie’s GoFundMe page. Since Steve Angello’s generous donation, the total amount is very close to their goal of $15,000. If you would like to donate to Allie’s Angels for Liver Transplant, please click here to do so.

Kill Paris at Terminal West | Atlanta, Ga.

Kill Paris stopped out Terminal West in Atlanta on June 2nd and got the club going up… on a Tuesday.

Kill Paris set out to impress the vastly larger crowd in attendance than his previous performance at the venue with just his music. There was no elaborate stage set up for any light show or specifically interesting scenery used as a background but that’s because it wasn’t necessary.  Setting off on his mission with the track, “Arrival” from his latest album, “Galaxies Between Us” any doubts of his most recent album’s success were silenced.

The set was true to Kill Paris’ unique future and Electro-funk sound featuring many originals from the new album as well as the previous. He was also paying homage to iconic throwbacks like, “Play that Funky Music White Boy” and “Return of The Mack.” However, those who may not have been familiar with the original versions of those songs were still drawn in due to his delightful mixing choices that made those tracks blend into the set seamlessly.  Along with those tracks, Kill Paris continued with some reworks of huge contributions to the genre like, “Smash the Funk” by GRiZ. Funk was the prerogative, but he also managed to support the vibe of the Atlanta crowd dropping some tracks that keeping it bass heavy. That’s how we love it in ATL. On a technical note the only let down seemed to be a bit of a snafu setting up his keytar which left it on the sidelines for this performance. It was a bigger disappointment to the artist himself than the fans. While he provided more than we could ask for, he still intended to do a bit more. This is a testament to Kill Paris because you enjoy seeing an artist strive for perfection in their performance but through experience not let technical problems hinder the show. Instead he continued orchestrating a killer party for as long as he could only stopping due to venue restrictions. Overhearing candid conversations after the show there was no disappointment. It was just that familiar feeling of leaving from a good show no one wanted to end.

Kill Paris is evolving and his name, along with a few other well-known artists, are leading the charge for the revival and progression of funk in this electronic era of music. Having seen him just a year ago to now, that’s clear; and it’s uniting all kinds of music lover’s together to support it. If Kill Paris comes to your town, any day of the week including a Tuesday, do yourself a favor and go check it out. The passion he has for his music and performances is more than evident. It translates to a fun fueled night for the fans. Despite the arrogance displayed by some in the scene, his humility is refreshing which he displayed at the beginning and end of the performance by making a point to shake hands with and thank everyone he could. Suffice it to say, the pleasure was all ours.

Holy Ship! Cracks Down, Blacklisting Attendees For Drug References on Social Media

Holy Ship!, the floating raver’s paradise, is one of the most unique festivals to hit the music festival circuit since its debut 4 years ago. Created by HARD Events founder, Gary Richards, aka Destructo, along with the help of Cloud 9 and The Bowery, it is a festival like no other. This 3-day EDM festival which is on a luxury cruise liner, houses up to 3,000 ravers and has a mind-blowing lineup consisting of the biggest names in electronic music to date.

Holy Ship! also has one of the most tight-knit following out of music festivals around the U.S. known as #shipfam. This extended rave family is pretty much exclusive to the rest of the EDM world. Not just anyone can call themselves #shipfam, you essentially have to be inducted to be considered part of this group. Now there is a little trouble in paradise for #shipfam and things are not looking so good for some of its members. Last Friday afternoon, June 6th, news broke that HARD’s partner, Cloud 9, had been allegedly “spying” on the secret group page for the festival. A few of the shippers received a letter sent from Cloud 9 which contained some very unfortunate news. Shippers were being notified that their reservations had been cancelled, and that they were permanently blacklisted from future events. This story was first brought to our attention by THUMP, and the news began to spread like wildfire all over the interwebs with tons of mixed emotion. Here’s an excerpt of the message from Cloud 9 to recipients: “We were very disappointed to see your recent comments in a Holy Ship! group page on Facebook – your posts have been documented and brought to our attention.

10842072_10152547065565474_1144349918691320745_o

The organizers, like every other major festival organizer, enforce a zero-tolerance drug policy and, “public remarks made about bringing illegal controlled substances onto the ship and in effect crossing a national border with contraband” prompted the cancellations.

Although none of these letters to the accused #shipfam contain any signature nor involvement of HARD’s CEO, Gary Richards, or HARD Events itself, the group is calling on both Gary Richards and HARD for comment on the matter. There are no statements that have been made on the subject from Richards at this time.

Some disgruntled #shipfam were upset with the harsh and judgmental tone the letter contained as well. The message further reads, “This will serve as a wake up call to you and others who think this type of behavior is acceptable. Perhaps this has prevented something with harsher penalties from happening. The fact that you were not caught or arrested for your actions will hopefully soften the let-down of not being allowed to ship with us in 2016.” It explains at the end of the letter that, “If you were pre-booked for HS 2016, a refund of $250 has been issued.

With all of that being said, here is my take on this rising issue of what is shaping up to be #ShipFamGate2015. It is 2015, folks, and social media has never been nor will it ever be a private safe haven! Even though you belong to a secret Facebook group, that possibility of a snitch or narc is almost certain. You really don’t know who could be lurking in a secret group that could screen shot anything you post, and bring it outside of a group. I have personally seen this happen in various secret groups on  social media in the past. Another thing to remember is, once you post something online, it is going to be out there forever regardless if you delete it afterwards. Talking about drugs in any fashion whether it be buying, selling, or smuggling on social media platforms is really not the best idea ever. Looking at it from an organizer’s point of view, they [Holy Ship! promoters] are simply attempting to cover their own asses by barring members for making drug references on a forum that is associated with their event. At the end of the day, these guys are a business looking out for themselves just like any other business would do. Regardless if the promoter’s actions seem harsh, they apparently want to send a strong message to other people planning on attending via scare tactic.

Keep in mind that drug charges are taken a little more seriously when taken aboard a cruise liner. If drugs were found on the vessel by law enforcement, it is considered by law to be smuggling drugs across borders and international waters. That is a much harsher punishment in the court system than just a possession charge on land. The organizers of Holy Ship! would probably much rather ban some people than have the possibility of dealing with an international drug trafficking court case. Let’s not forget the unfair RAVE Act (Reducing American’s Vulnerability to Ecstasy) still exists! This allows the government to imprison property owners, organizers, and promoters for up to 20 years in federal prison and slap them with a $250,000 fine as well. A business can be held responsible and prosecuted by the government for drug related crimes committed by its customers even if the business itself has nothing to do with said crimes. With that in mind, could you blame the promoters of Holy Ship! for banning members due to them mentioning drugs on the internet? Absolutely not! In fear of going to prison for that long as well as getting fined a quarter million dollars, you better believe they will not even hesitate to prevent any chance of that happening.

10904592_10152547076850474_6500832348125697060_o

On the other hand, the main argument that could be used in defense of the blacklisted folks is this useful piece of knowledge: Posting something on social media actually does not prove any intent. Posting on social media is often ruled as freedom of speech via expression. Thus, posts on social media cannot possibly show any true intent whatsoever, regardless of how serious the posts may seem because it is simply freedom of expression. That being said, if some of these Holy Ship! attendees were referencing drugs on social media, it could merely mean nothing at all. There is no actual proof of the action being carried out because it has not even occurred yet, it’s just a statement at this point. Even though there is no legal action being taken on either side, you could say that these people are innocent until proven guilty. Posting on Facebook is actually not a crime, and they have not actually carried out whatever it was they posted to get them banned in the first place. The #shipfam were simply practicing their given right of free speech via expression without any real intention of participating in illegal activity such as smuggling drugs across international waters. To further understand this point, refer to this recent Supreme Court case. It was the first ever Supreme Court case to address freedom of speech on social media.

Looking at this issue with an unbiased opinion, both sides of the argument raise valid points. This could be a unfair punishment for someone expressing themselves with their freedom of speech; or this could mean that the attendee speaking of drugs on a forum related to Holy Ship! is in violation of the organizer’s zero-tolerance drug policy. Either way you view it, my advice is simply this: Do not discuss controlled substances in any way, shape, or form on social media outlets. That way you stay out of situations like these poor shippers have put themselves in. Especially if the very social media outlet you are part of has an association with the event in which you are attending. You truly don’t know who might be watching your every move online. One of the biggest questions that is being asked is, just exactly how did Cloud 9 obtain such info that these people were discussing on a secret page? Could this mean that there is a snitch(s) among the group? Or could this mean that the Holy Ship! promoters are actually spying on the group page’s members like it was originally thought? We will probably never find out the truth unless someone fesses up. Moral of this unfortunate story, discussions about taking or smuggling drugs on social media is not smart at all; and it is the easiest way to get yourself banned from having the time of your life on an amazing festival cruise like Holy Ship!.

10 Reasons You Should Make The Trip to Spring Awakening Music Festival in Chicago

There is a reason that this year will be my third pilgrimage to Spring Awakening Music Festival on June 12-14th, in Chicago. Actually, there are several reasons why. Here are my top ten:

Sunset Music Festival 2015 – Tampa, Florida

Memorial Day Weekend was a huge weekend for music festivals across the entire nation. Festival junkies had a smorgasbord to choose from to fulfill their musical desires – Counterpoint, Mysteryland, EDC NY, Movement, Summer Camp. But there was one in particular that really grabbed our attention here at RaversChoice, and that was Sunset Music Festival in Tampa, Florida. The event took place just a few minutes outside of downtown Tampa at Raymond James Stadium on May 23-24th. It featured such an incredible lineup that we just had to take the trip down to Tampa Bay and see what this festival was all about.

Sunset Music Festival has only been around for a few years; but it has quickly made a name for itself during its tenure thanks to veteran organizers Disco Donnie Presents, Sunset Events, and Committee Entertainment. Each year SMF has delivered a jam-packed lineup consisting of some of the biggest names in electronic dance music, along with spectacular production and an absolutely beautiful crowd.

For the 2015 installment of this music festival, we were presented with the likes of Tiesto, Skrillex, Armin van Buuren, Flosstradamus, Porter Robinson, and Showtek. Joining these headliners was a plethora of EDM all-stars:Cedric Gervais, Duke Dumont, Don Diablo, Keys N Krates, Oliver Heldens, Tchami, and much more.

Although there was brief weather delay on Saturday during the opening hours of the festival which resulted in the evacuation of attendees until the heavy rain and lightning cleared, the party continued as scheduled for the rest of day 1. Trance and house lovers were in musical paradise on the opening day of SMF. The Eclipse stage had the trance family in full force with performances by Jordan Suckley, Mark Sixma, MaRlo, and Andrew Rayel. Over at the Horizon stage, there was a wonderful mix of house and a little basss sprinkled in with Mija, Trippy Turtle, SNBRN, Cashmere Cat, Destructo, and Tchami. The main stage, or Sunset stage, delivered some powerful sets as well. Some highlight sets from the Sunset Stage included a face melting set from Skrillex, an oh-so-groovy set from the future house prodigy, Oliver Heldens, and a massive set from the legendary Tiesto.

Of course, the party was nowhere near over for the opening day. The official after party for SMF took place at Amphitheater in Ybor City near downtown Tampa. Destructo and Mija were the headliners for the day one after party, and both of them played some electrifying sets. Guests at Amphitheater were also given a special surprise appearance by none other than Skrillex to top off a spectacular first day of Sunset Music Festival 2015.

We hit the ground running on day two, picking up right where we left off from day one. The Sunset stage was just as stacked as the first day with huge sets from The Chainsmokers, DVBBS, Showtek and Audien. The Horizon stage got a little tropical with feel-good sets by Viceroy, Sam Feldt, Thomas Jack, and Robin Schulz. Bouncing over to the Eclipse stage, things got down and dirty with some heavy trap and bass sets from Keys N Krates,Flosstradamus, and Meaux Green. There was even a little hardstyle thrown in with Headhunterz and Noise Controllers as well. We were given a life changing set at the Sunset stage from the legendary king of trance, Armin van Buuren, who put the entire crowd in A State Of Trance. It was such a perfect way to close out what was an unforgettable music festival. Take a look at the recap video of Sunset Music Festival 2015 below.

We can't thank you all enough!! #SMF15See you in 2016!

Once again, Sunset Music Festival was a huge success. The production was nothing short of extraordinary with amazing lighting and lasers, along with great sound and stage arrangement. The lineup across the board had something to tickle every EDM lover’s fancy. We hope that this festival will be back for many years to come. Hats off to Disco Donnie Presents, Sunset Events, and Committee Entertainment for working so hard on delivering such an outstanding music festival each year. We will definitely come back to SMF again in the future. Huge thank you to Disco Donnie for inviting us out to SMF, we had so much fun. Hangout Music Festival 2015

On May 15th-17th Alabama’s Hangout Music Festival delivered yet another flawless musical experience for its 2015 attendees. Hosted along the coast of Gulf Shores, Hangout Music Festival is one of the few US music festivals that intertwine stage platforms with sandy shores, luxurious beachfront views, and the cool ocean breeze. Although the festival atmosphere was more than noteworthy, Hangout’s ability to please was largely due to the uniquely genre-diverse lineup that flooded the stages all weekend.

The lineup offered something for all, but we were pleasantly surprised to witness the heavy incorporation of EDM throughout the festival. With the original lineup release boasting names like Major Laser, Skrillex, GRiZ, Adventure Club, and Gramatik; EDM lovers entered the weekend expecting jaw-dropping performances—and boy, did we receive.

skrillix hangout festival

Hangout made a special surprise announcement just days before May 15th, that a last minute act had been added to the lineup. Jack Ü, a collaborative project belonging to none other than Diplo and Skrillex closed out the first night of the festival. Pulling massive crowds from around the venue, Friday night’s Jack Ü set may very well have been one of the best performances of the duo’s relatively new collaborative career. Starting the night off with “Take Ü There”, Jack Ü captivated the audience and the high intensity carried throughout the set. Dropping tracks like “Earth Quake”, and the new crazed single, “Club Action” by Yo Majesty, Jack Ü captivated the audience. Saturday night Major Laser romped the stage, followed by a performance from Skrillex to end the night.

Although Skrillex and Diplo rightfully staged a Hangout Music Festival takeover, the EDM emersion didn’t stop there. Not only did we get to experience performances from artists like Beats Antique, ODESZA, and Krewella, we were granted multiple appearances throughout the weekend from Mija, jackLNDN and Autograf within the festival’s Malibu Beach House tent.

Overall, we applaud the high standards and qualities of Hangout Music Festival. The atmosphere was absolutely wonderful, and the good vibes were contagious throughout the weekend. It was certainly refreshing to see genre-diverse music festivals embracing the world of EDM. Well-done Hangout, keep up the good work! Until next year!
